Where to stay

The Vale Resort is the perfect base to explore these courses. Not only is it home to luxury accommodation, an award-winning spa and some mouthwatering bars and restaurants, but it also has two championship 18-hole golf courses of its own.

Making the cut

Start off at Southerndown, home to some of the fastest and tightest links turf in the UK. Laid out around a domed the limestone headland with spectacular views over the Bristol Channel, it is a course that demands precision and creativity. Eyes peeled for the short par-three 10th, which demands an accurate shot to a sloping green guarded by no less than five bunkers.

Further along the coast you’ll find the windswept links of Royal Porthcawl, a course that has been wowing visitors for quite some time. According to professional golfer and ‘godfather of sportswriters’ Bernard Darwin: ‘Links it may worthily be called, for the golf at Porthcawl is the genuine thing – the sea in sight all of the time, and the most noble bunkers . . . Porthcawl is emphatically a good and serious course.’ More recently, it made the number 45 spot on Golf Digest’s annual list of the world’s best golf courses and in 2014 will host the Senior Open Championship, Wales’s first Major competition. Players both professional and amateur can expect a real test. Deep revetted bunkers guard perfect greens, while holes that face all points of the compass make for a constantly shifting challenge

Pyle and Kenfig may not be as well known as some of its neighbours, but it’s every bit as deserving of a visit. A true game of two halves, its inland front nine is the place to make your score before the final holes take you amid the rugged dunes and closer to the sea. It’s an unforgettably varied golfing experience that ties up with a final three that some claim to be the best closing holes in golf.
