Food Trail Mid Wales

 

Day 1

Starting off in Monmouthshire we visit Tintern Abbey.

 

Then we travel onto Monmouth to visit Trealy Farm Charcuterie at 3pm Manufacturers of charcuterie using traditional methods of curing, smoking and air –drying. They use exclusively locally raised, traditional breed, free range animals (mainly pigs but we also make beef, lamb, wild boar, venison, rabbit and even goat products), fed on natural feeds. Knowing where their meat comes from they are able to keep those breeds going and also to ensure that local farmers get a decent price for their animals. In return they are guaranteed pigs that give beautifully marbled meat with intense flavour and perfect texture. Meat such as this is the first step in ensuring the finest quality charcuterie products.

Day 2

All aboard again and we head to visit Black Mountains Smokery, Crickhowell by 10am - A family-run gourmet food business based in the Brecon Beacons. Their award-winning smoked foods are carefully sourced from British suppliers and traditionally cured and smoked at their smokehouse in Crickhowell - Local artisan food at its best.

 

Whilst in the area, why not stop by Black Mountain Gold Chocolate.


Then we move onto Blaenafon for a visit to Blaenafon Chedder Company
All their cheeses are hand made at their shop in Blaenafon. Their Pwll Mawr cheddar is actually matured at the bottom of the mine shaft at Big Pit mining museum and can be bought at their gift shop. Some of their cheeses are flavoured with Penderyn Welsh whisky, Welsh white wine, Reverend James ale and other local ingredients. The four heritage cheddars are coated in different coloured waxes with scenes of Blaenafon's industrial heritage on the labels.


As you’ve learnt about the cheese in Big Pit why not take a visit to Big Pit. A real coal mine and one of Britain’s leading mining museums. With facilities to educate and entertain all ages. A visit to Big Pit included a 300ft descent into the old colliery, where a former coalminer will take you on a fascinating and personal tour with the sights, sounds and smells of the mine creating an impression of what working life was like at the coalface.

 

Then its to a cookery School in Blaenafon – "The Chefs Room" you will spend an entertaining morning learning to cook some simple and delicious dishes that illustrate Welsh-Italian fusion cuisine with renowned chef Franco Taruschio who for several years ran the Walnut Tree restaurant in Abergavenny, earning the chef a Michelin star and an OBE. The class ends with a tasting lunch.


Travel through the Brecon Beacons, suggest overnight accommodation in Brecon.

 

Day 3

Today we visit Coity Bach Farm Produce, Talybont on Usk Nr Brecon. They Produce handmade farm produce. All produce is made from their own farm animals. They make a variety of speciality flavoured sausages, from Sweet Chili (True Taste of Wales winners 2012), Herb & Garlic, Honey and Mustard, Stilton, Leek, Tomato and Plain etc


Then it’s to Llanfaes Dairy.  They have a wide variety of flavours for you to choose from (up to 42 in season). Here you can see ice cream being produced through a viewing window. At this parlour you can either take away or sit in. They do a range of traditional desserts like Knickerobocker Glories and Banana Splits as well as our own specialities like Pavlova Specials and Toffee Nut Crunch along with a range of fresh Italian coffees drinking chocolates and milk shakes made using their ice cream.

 

Time for lunch ( if you have any room after all that ice cream ) we travel to the village of Talgarth and to Talgarth Mill.


In the heart of Talgarth, powered by the flow of the River Ellywe, you will find Melin Talgarth Mill, a fully restored, 18th century flour mill complete with bakery, gift shop and a riverside café serving local seasonal food and drink which is run by volunteers.


Visit to Hay On Wye, Town of Books – Here you have some free time to explore the town and its 39 books shops – you will be sure to find that book that you’ve been looking for here !!


Heading North we visit Erwood Station.

Day 4

Do you like mushrooms or spending the morning in the forest? Wales has the perfect climate for the most delicious mushrooms known to man – and Rhayader offer the best hunting grounds, the woods and fields are awash with mushrooms that command astronomical price in restaurants across Europe.

Capes. Girolles, pied de mouton, parasols and giant puffballs are just some of the prized fungi that are locally abundant. In the morning, on a gentle amble through spectacular Elan Valley scenery, author and mushroom expert Daniel Butler will show you a range of the abundant edible fungi that thrive in this pristine mountain area. Then is back to a luxurious 17th century barn conversion for a mushroom based meal. 

 

Following we travel onto Llanidloes to visit Welsh Mountain Cider.

A small holding who produce award wining Welsh Cider and herritage Apple and pear trees.

Day 5

This morning its all aboard the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway.  From the open balconies of our unique Hungarian and Austrian coaches you will see the beautiful mid Wales countryside roll slowly by as you travel into the delightful Banwy Valley.

 

At Welshpool you have a little free time for a wonder before we travel onto Montgomery.  

 

Visit Monty’s Brewery, Montgomery, there has been an explosion in the number of Welsh Micro-breweries in the last few years. There are now over 60 breweries to choose from. Not only that, but Welsh Breweries are consistently performing well in National and International competitions. Monty’s Brewery is proud to be the first brewery in Montgomeryshire since the 1980’s. The owner and head brewer, Pam Honeyman is one of only a handful of brewsters (female brewer) in the UK.Monty’s aim is to provide quality real ales and excellent service to all our customers. We take a tour and sample their excellent ales.
